In late 1979 Thatcher was just going to sink her teeth into Britain and take her deep inside a depression and also eventually the Falklands War,There was another movement underway the new two tone invasion was about to take the youth on the skinhead train to Skaville.The Specials with their own version of classic skinhead anthems had self penned & released on there own label a track called Gangsters with riffs stolen from Prince Buster.Their label was called 2 Tone and it captured the youths imaginations.They dressed similar to the original skinhead style of the sixties but had a newer political/punkier/ska crossover sound that the new breed of skinhead could identify with.Along with label mates The Selecter and Madness they went on to tour Britain and start the skinhead revival once more.Soon the kids on the streets were sporting short cropped hair,Doc Martens,Crombies and Bracers.These kids were the new breed and they were having fun,The difference with the new skinheads was their more punkier influences and their adoration of the British flag and ways.Soon groups emerged on the scene and influenced many of the new skins with their National Socialist ideas,The National Front were seen at concerts and caused trouble.The Specials had their fair share of this and so did other groups including Sham 69.Sham had a massive skinhead following and eventually split because of the trouble at their gigs.The new skinhead had adopted a new form of music called OI! This was the new breeds very own music that didnt come from the spirit of 69,It was a honest working class/punkier sound,More aggresive to suit the spirit of this newer skinhead.Even though some bands from this working class type of music rejected the racist ideas they were like most skinheads at that time being all labelled Nazi's by the media and middle class familys In Britain.Stupid programs and films promoted the skinhead as a glue sniffin borstal yobo with swastikas tattoed on every part of there body,It all came to a head when the band The 4 Skins played a gig in Southall,It was a mainly Asian community and they objected to some skinheads on the day apparently causing trouble.The Asians burnt the venue to the ground and rioted through the night.The media loved this and the fate of the skinhead was sealed forever as a bunch of racist yobs.Britain under Margaret Thatcher was rotting away,Mass nnemployment,Rubbish building up on the streets,The National Front etc spreading their hatred for anyone less than white,The country had had enough.Riots in the citys soon broke out,The Specials song Ghost Town summed up Britain's mood in one song.It was to be their last single,They split soon after.Many of the skinhead oi! bands tried to shake the racist thing and many wrote songs against this,The Oppressed were one such band.The Oi! movement was never about racism,It was intended to be for working class youths of every colour etc but there were some bands who sang for white pride including Screwdriver,who were very popular with certain skinheads.There were quite a few different type of skinhead in the early 80's,The most popular was the OI! skinhead who listened to Two Tone & Oi! Also there was the traditional skinhead who listened to mainly ska & dressed like the 69 skins and then there was the Nazi skinhead.Alot of skinheads dont recognise these as skinheads and call them boneheads because they believe that they are traitors to the roots of the original skinhead.
